Good Day grillers far & wide!

FINALLY, we’ve had that scent of real spring air for well over a week now and I know you all know what this griller’s talking about! So, I was cruising down the highway the other day and as you’d expect I had some Zeppelin pumping out of my speakers and breaking the sound barrier because we all know Zeppelin in the spring sounds sooooo good, doesn’t it? Come to think of it, all one has to do is add fire and well aged marbled meat to the sound scape and you’ve instantly got ingredients for one hell of a deck side party!

Then it hit me, my next creative brain wave for this post and a way to further pay it forward to people everywhere about a company currently in category as it relates to all things kamado and that company is Primo, http://primogrill.com/. I do apologize ahead of time if you all thought this was going to be a boring 500 word essay on my love affair for the song “Ozone Baby” even though I think its one of the bands best ever.

No my friends this is about the Primo brand and their very unique oval shaped cookers they’ve been producing for almost twenty years right out of their factory in Norcross Georgia, USA. Yes, I said Made In the US of A!!!! Go figure, but its true and although we see and will continue to see many imitation products flooding our North American continent from China in years to come there are still those very special brands and products across many industries that have dug their heels into the sand and chosen the path of most resistance to take a stand and build a better quality product right here, closer to home, and Primo’s one of those brands without a doubt.

I remember going back to ’06 when I first became aware that Primo even exisisted and in those days I was exclusively selling the likes of the BGE out of the back seat of my VW and a thought occurred to me. If this Primo cooker cooks as well as the BGE or any other circular cooker in category, ( not that there even was a category back then) doesn’t it make sense to test it out for all it’s worth? Test it I did and the food results were just as good as BGE but this cooker called Primo had and still has an advantage in my opinion, its’ oval shape!

Today I roll into all my parties with Primo product and no, just in case you think they’re paying me to say this, they aren’t. No my friends, I simply LOVE the fact that the grilling real estate you have when cooking on this product gives you that much more freedom and over all flexibility to work the grill’s surface. What’s even more of a bonus to a guy who makes a living part of the year doing what I do is the fact that Primo are the only company in category to date that have main grills that sit flush with the exterior lip of their vessel. This tiny little detail makes a HUGE difference when you have 40 pieces of the best Atlantic salmon sizzling away per cooker and they need to come off fast and undamaged.

Primo’s biggest disadvantage from a pure product perspective over the years has been a huge gap between the size offerings in their line up but that too has now been remedied thanks to the brand spanking new large oval model that positions itself nicely between the Junior and XL ovals. Now, you have three oval models to choose from and they even make a complete and traditional round kamado cooker as well.

If that isn’t enough and you’re the type who loves your whiskey, Primo have teamed up under license with the one and only Jack Daniels and have produced a signature series model cooker complete with table ┬áto compliment that special spot on and in your outdoor living space that’ll make your friends teary eyed with envy!

Primo also produce simple and functional accessories that literally come close to doubling your over all grill space and by far the best set of accessories are the drip racks and deflector plates that within seconds turn your cooker into an efficient in-direct smoker that has the capacity to fit a trimmed 40lbs. suckling pig on it if this is how you roll.

If you’re a smaller group and you do invest in an oval cooker model fear not wasting charcoal as the cast iron divider splits your interior fire bowl in half and voila! Cooking direct and in-direct is a cinch, convenient and fun as hell!

Cast iron griddles and a pizza stone are also available if you like flap jacks with your bacon and eggs in the morning or if you’re more of a pizza pie fanatic and want your Primo to double as a wood fired oven, knock yer socks off and keep dusting that stone because these cookers churn out delicious pizza faster than you can say, pass the vino!

If you live in the greater Ottawa area in our beautiful Nation’s Capitol, Primo can be found at Romantic Fireplaces and Bbq Cave in Orleans,http://www.romanticfireplaces.com/ or Capitol Bbq in Nepean.

There you have it my friends, another ditty from the GTO-Zone here at Casa grateful and I want to wish all of you a fire filled weekend coming with non stop fun and freaky delicious food!

Until our next fire dance,

Feed your fires!

The Kamado Joe BigJoe has a grid at the opening level if you use their rack. And it has a firebox divider so you can do exactly the same thing as you can with the XL primo. But the KJ is round and therefore its 24″ circle is bigger than the Primo 18×25 oval. For my money, the KJ BigJoe does everything the Primo XL does and it has more cooking space. It might even be cheaper.

      Hi Will!
Many thanks for chiming in and commenting. To your points, I think KJ are most certainly pushing that size and space envelope without question and I don’t think the post reflects who’s bigger or smaller etc just my own opinion that I believe they may have an advantage is all, cooking results on both units are identical. I’m so happy to see a kamado brand finally trying to do and offer more with a round cooker and KJ are that company without question in category currently. The added value they bring to the table for the end consumer on many levels is great. I’m also intimately familiar with their product and have had the pleasure of dealing with them and even working with them over the years. Stay tuned for further posts on their products and if you own one then keep feeding your fires man! Thanks again for touching base!
